Cold.

So cold.

The warmth dissipates, never constant, so empty.

"Simon," she whimpers as she pulls the thin cover over her body, seeking the warmth she never finds.

She trembles, trying to forgot what could have been, what might have been if he-

She curses to herself and flings the cover off, not willing to let her mind travel to those thoughts again.

"I hate you!" She cries as she hits her pillow and her body trembles as her tears form once more. "I hate you," she whimpers, her breath catching as she sobs for her loss.

She stills, and just for a small second she almost feels him beside her. She can almost reach out and touch him. Almost.

Her fingers brush against empty air and she bites back another sob, hating that she has been reduced to this.

Cold.

So cold.

Kaylee. Oh, my Kaylee.

"Simon?" She calls out as she feels him, she stretches her hand out and for a second she feel something almost tangible.

I'm here.

"I miss you," she whimpers opening her eyes to see him standing before her. "Simon!" She gasps as she sits up and throws her arms around him.

Kaylee.

"They told me you didn't make it, they told me you were-" she cries as she clings to him.

Shh, bao-bei. It's time.

"Simon?" She cries as she feels him fade away.

"Clear!" A medic ordered as he attempted to shock Kaylee's body once more.

"Asystole." Another medic proclaimed as she glanced at the clock and back to her friends, her family in the waiting room.

"How long?" he questioned, frowning as he recharged the panels and rechecked the pulmonary stimulators and cardiac infusers.

"Ten minutes," she replied as she turned off the alarming monitors. "Call it."

He sighed, glancing at the clock. "Time of death, 1828."

~

Simon offers her a small smile as she stares once more at her lifeless body. "I don't remember." Kaylee whispers as she turns to him.

"There was an explosion, the reactor-" He begins as he wraps his arms around her, offering the solace she has been craving for so long.

"I was careless," she replies, looking up into his eyes. "I just missed you so gorram much."

"No, bao-bei." He soothes, "there was nothing you could do, it was time."

She sighs and tucks her head under his chin, squeezing him as she glances over at the rest of the crew mourning over her.

"It was too soon," she whispers. "Too soon after-"

"Shh," Simon murmurs as he kisses her forehead.

River stood off to the side and smiled as she watched her brother and Kaylee reunite, maybe now he would be able to rest in peace. Maybe now they could all rest.
