Simon rubs his forehead, a small headache forming as he studies the most recent medical journals. He sighs and glances up from the screen.
"Zoë," he gasps as he notices her for the first time standing quietly at the door. "I'm sorry. I was preoccupied- have you been waiting long?"
"No," she shrugs as she hesitantly comes forward.
"Did you need something?" He asks as she stops a few feet away from him.
"I reckon I'm pregnant." Zoë begins and Simon stands up quickly.
"Pregnant?" Simon questions in awe. "I didn't realize you were trying to-"
"No," she sighs heavily, closing her eyes briefly. "I can't, not now- timin' ain't right with us headin' to Miranda and all."
"Oh." Simon nods, frowning slightly. "And Wash?"
Her lips thin and she forces back a sob. "He don't know and I reckon he won't find out neither, dong ma?"
"If that is what you wish," Simon replies quickly and she forces a small smile to her face.
"Timin' just ain't right," Zoë repeats softly. "Last we talked- he don't want our child livin' like we do."
"I can see his concern," He adds as he turns away from her. "I gather you want something to-"
"Yes," She agrees quickly, not wanting to drag this out any more than she has to.
"I only have one tablet," Simon explains as he takes a bottle out of a drawer. "They are rare out here and there was no need to keep a supply-"
"Only need the one," she whispers as she reaches out for the bottle.
"There will be some cramping," he begins as he waves his hands in front of him. "You will bleed for a day or two and then it will be over."
Zoë nods as he hands her the bottle. "Thank you."
"Drink extra fluids," he continues barely acknowledging her token of gratitude. "And if the bleeding continues for more than-"
"No!" River interrupts and comes running into the med bay.
"Mei mei," Simon scolds as she grabs the pill bottle from Zoë's hand. "Give that back."
River shakes her head and runs around the med bay staying out of reach. "A leaf on the wind," she sings as she opens the bottle and swallows the pill quickly.
"River!" Simon gasps as he stares at his sister and then glances back at Zoë. "I-"
"Can't stop the signal," River laments, tears falling down her face. "Can't stop it." She whispers as she throws the bottle to the ground. "Leaf on the wind."
Zoë blinks at her, not following her crazy musings. "Guess I'll let you tend to your sister," she grates as she shoots a glare at Simon.
"I'm sorry," Simon sighs as she shakes her head and leaves quickly. He growls and turns to his sister. "River," he drawls, his voice laced with disappointment.
"Can't stop the signal," she repeats. "Death lingers, need a birth to rectify."
Simon sighs, not understanding her. "That pill will make you sick."
"Yes," she smiles. "But, now Wash will live forever."
The end.
