My sixth of 100 stories for Simon Tam au100 Challenge . Not beta'd. |
I stood on the bridge, watching the blackness spread out before us. Limitless, foreign, unnatural-
Bleak. Unforgiving. Suffocating.
"Bi zuie."
I blinked and glanced back to see my sister staring at me. "River?" I began, immediately turning my attention to her. "Are you-"
"Bi zuie." She insisted once more and I couldn't help but frown in response. "Stop thinking."
"River," I sighed, shaking my head.
"Your thoughts are rambling, unfounded." She nodded as she offered me a bright smile. "Our young doctor shouldn't be so pessimistic."
"River, I-" I groaned as I rubbed the back of my neck.
"You miss colors," she whispered, her eyes widening briefly before fluttering closed. "Sunsets. Red, orange, pink, purple- blending, pure, real."
"Yes," I sighed, biting back a sob as she described what I had been feeling.
"Crisp green of the fields of grass, fragrant after the morning dew," she continued her voice soft and breathless. "Brisk blue of the afternoon sky." Her eyes snapped open and she glared at me. "All nonessential to life, your body doesn't need them. You crave it, like Kaylee's touch, the captain's approval. Selfish."
I gasped my mouth dropping at the tone of her voice and accusation. "I-"
"Selfish." She reprimanded, shaking her head in disgust.
"No," I groaned, not willing to admit to such a thing.
"Yes," she nodded as she flashed a bright smile and twirled away.
I turned back to the darkness feeling the weight of her words. I sighed, shaking my head as I rubbed the back of my neck. "No."
The end.
