Kyle hung up his jacket and tossed his book bag to the floor. “Hello?”
he called out as he walked into the living room. “Dad? Tess?”
He paused, frowning slightly. “Anyone home?” He questioned
as he glanced around the room and started to head back to the bedrooms,
when he caught sight of a figure outside in the backyard through the
widow.
He turned quickly and made his way to the back door. He opened the
door, taking a second to study the lone figure sitting on the old
picnic table.
The moonlight illuminated her face and he was taken aback by her simple
beauty. He wanted more then anything to take her in his arms and hold
her, to tell her that destiny isn’t always written in the stars.
That maybe it was what was in their hearts that led to their true
destiny.
He continued to watch her as she tilted her head up and closed her
eyes. Kyle’s breathing hitched when he noticed her tears glistening
in the moonlight. For the first time he had a glimpse at her real
emotions, that she usually hid behind the strong alien facade she
claimed to have. He rarely saw her like this; not many have.
A soft sob escaped her lips and he froze, his heart constricting with
more pain then he thought possible. “Tess,” he whispered
as he took a step closer.
She sat up quickly in response, wiping at her eyes furiously. “Kyle?”
she gasped as she wiped her hands on her thighs and attempted to get
up from her spot. “I didn’t hear you come in,” she
replied weakly as he motioned for her to stay and he sat down beside
her.
A moment of silence passed between them as he waited for her to relax
more at his presence. “What’s wrong?” he questioned
as he turned to her. “Hmm?” she asked as their
gazes met. She blinked quickly, trying to push back her tears and
looked away. “Tess,.” he replied softly as he
reached out and took her hands into his. “What’s wrong?”
he repeated and she shook her head, her blond ringlets bouncing around
her head. “It’s stupid,” she shrugged,
trying to pull her hands away from his, but he held strong. “It’s
just a stupid human tradition.”
“What human tradition?” Kyle inquired as he tried to figure
out what she was talking about. “It’s nothing,”
Tess claimed as she glanced around the backyard as if she was looking
for a way to escape. “It’s stupid. It’s not like
its a real day, I mean I don’t even know for sure. It’s,
oh, just forget it,” she mumbled as she pulled her fingers away
from his and pushed away from the table. “What day?”
he asked more to himself as he followed her back into the house.
“I appreciate it, Kyle,” she began as she turned
back to him. “But you don’t need to baby sit me, I’m
fine.”
“You don’t look fine to me,” he countered as he
continued to study her sad eyes.
“I’m fine, really.” Tess sighed as she shook her
head. “It’s not like I can be mad at no one remembering,
because no one knew, and it’s just a stupid human celebration-”
Tess voiced trailed on as Kyle suddenly understood what human tradition
she was talking about. “Happy birthday, Tess,” he interrupted
a small grin on his lips. “Oh!” Tess gasped,
her eyes brightening. “Really?” she smiled, twisting her
hands together. “Happy birthday, to my favorite alien,”
he grinned as she giggled. “Hold that thought!” he stated
quickly as he left her and ran into the kitchen. “Kyle?”
she questioned as she started to follow him into the kitchen.
“Nope,” he called back, stopping her in his tracks.
“Stay there,” he instructed as he pulled out a cupcake
Tess had made the previous day and placed a candle on it.
“Kyle?” she whined playfully, trying to peek to see what
he was doing.
“Close your eyes,” he ordered as he poked his head out
to see if she complied.
“Oh, ok.” Tess giggled, closing her eyes as Kyle lit the
candle and crossed over to her.
“Open your eyes,” he grinned as she did and squealed at
the cupcake and candle. “Happy birthday!” “It’s
perfect,” she mused as she stared into the flickering light.
“Make a wish,” he urged, holding the plate closer to her.
She closed her eyes briefly before she looked up at him and blew out
the candle. “Thank you,” she smiled, taking
the cupcake from him and took a bite of the gooey concoction. “Oh,
Kyle!” she squealed, her eyes sparkling. “You put Tabasco
on it!” “Only the best for the beautiful birthday
girl,” he grinned in reply as she placed the rest of the cupcake
on the table and threw her arms around him. “You’re
the best!” she stated as Kyle wrapped his arms around her and
held her closer.
“Happy birthday,” he whispered once more, letting his
true feelings slip as he leaned in and kissed her. Tess froze in response,
but warmed quickly, returning the kiss.
They pulled apart as they heard the front door open. Tess blinked
up at him, touching her lips. “Thank you,” she smiled
and then pressed her fingers to his. “You made this into the
perfect day.”
“Not such a stupid human tradition, huh?” Kyle grinned,
reaching out, knowing that if she accepted his hand, it would be a
promise for more to come. “Not at all,” she
laughed, taking his hand and squeezing it softly. “Not at all.”
