Summary Kyle and Tess return to Roswell. Set around 'Chant Down Babylon'
Spoilers Spoilers for 'Chant Down Babylon'

Smoke lingered in the air, as the fire burned stronger, engulfing him in pain. His lungs burned, he couldn't breathe. He gasped for air and cringed in pain.

He sat up in bed pushing the constricting feeling of death away. "He's dead!"

He took several deep breaths trying to calm the lingering feeling of death. "He's dead," he repeated as an arm wrapped around his waist.

"Hmm?" She murmured, looking up at him. "What's wrong?"

He stiffened slightly at her touch as the burning fire continued to play in his mind. He was dead- the one that gave him life. "Max-"

"Max?" She repeated as she rubbed his back. "What about him?"

"He's dead," he groaned as his gaze met hers.

"Max?" She gasped. "How do-"

"He's dead. I can feel it-" he whispered as he felt the hot tears burn his eyes.

"Kyle?" She whispered as he pushed himself to the side of the bed and stood up. He felt the familiar electricity in the air and gazed down at his hands.

"Oh, it's happening again-" she gasped as she watched the green bolts dance on his skin.

He nodded absentmindedly and rubbed his hands up and down his arms. "We have to find out- I need to know if it's true."

"You know we can't do that," She replied standing up and crossing to her husband. "We can't go back."

"But-" he cried. "I need to know if he's dead. I need to know if this is happening to Liz- is it just an alien side effect, or is something else?" Kyle sighed and shook his head, "I miss my dad."

"I-" She whispered not knowing what to say. She wrapped her arms around him and kissed his chest over his heart.

"Tess-" He moaned as he ran a hand through her darkened curls. She laid her head on his chest and squeezed her arms around him, needing to feel closer to him.

"Do you regret us?" She asked, her voice cracking ever so slightly.

"No, never-" He gasped. He lifted her chin and gazed into her eyes, "I love you."

"But, you gave up so much-" she gasped choking on her words as tears welled up in her eyes.

"We had no choice," Kyle whispered as he kissed her softly.

"But, you regret the lies- the betrayal." She whispered pulling herself away from him.

"Tess-" Kyle groaned. "It isn't like that."

"I love you, I love our child to be-" Tess cried as she rubbed her exposed abdomen, a soft glow pulsated under her touch.

Kyle sighed as another wave of pain engulfed his senses, doubling over he cried out in pain.

Tess gasped at the pain engraved in his features. "Kyle?" She groaned, running to his side and helping him to their bed.

"It's getting worse-" He mumbled. "What's happening to me?"

"I don't know-" Tess cried as she tried to stop his pain with a soothing touch.

"Maybe they know, maybe they have answers-" Kyle wondered as he looked at his wife. "We have to go back."

Tess nodded and gulped back her tears. "I'm scared."

"So, am I."

~

"I can't do this!" Tess cried as she looked over at their former home.

"We're already here," Kyle replied as he gently squeezed her hand and followed her gaze.

"They won't understand-" Tess whispered. "What if he's still around?"

"He hasn't made an appearance since our charade," Kyle replied, kissing her hand. "Everything will be ok."

"I wish I could believe that," Tess whispered.

Kyle smiled and wrapped his arm around her shoulders. "Let's go," he whispered as they walked up to the door.

They entered into the silence as old sights and smells infiltrated their senses- it had been so long. He looked expectantly to his father's room, only to hear hushed voices coming from his former room.

Kyle glanced at Tess as Michael entered the room and stopped dead in his tracks. He looked at Kyle then glanced back to the room he emerged from. "Who are you?" Michael demanded as he raised his hand to strike. He sucked in a deep breath as he noticed Tess at his side. "Tess?!"

"Where's Max?" Kyle asked as he stepped protectively in front of Tess.

"He's dead," Michael mumbled as he stared at the two in front of him.

"That’s what I thought- but it feels different-" Kyle replied as Jim walked into the room.

"Michael, we need-" Jim's voice lingered off as noticed the two in front of him.

"Dad!" Kyle gasped as he walked towards him, but Michael interceded and pushed Kyle away from Jim.

"Who are you?" Michael commanded.

"I'm Kyle," he replied as he turned back to Tess. "And this is Tess, my wife-"

"Wife?" Michael gasped. "That's not possible!" Michael cried as he turned towards Tess. "You're doing this, aren't you?" He accused, "this is some fucked up mindwarp-"

"No," Tess whispered as she clung onto Kyle. "I knew this was a mistake-"

"Please, give us a chance to explain," Kyle pleaded as they continued to stare at them. "Last night, I had this dream about a fire- I felt his pain. I knew that Max was dead. But, this morning it felt different- it felt like he came back."

"You expect me to believe that you felt him die?" Michael laughed.

"Ever since he healed me, I've felt him-"

"Impossible-" Michael replied angrily.

"Why is that?" Kyle snapped.

"Because you aren't Kyle." Michael explained. "He's in the other room-"

"It may seem like he is," Kyle paused. "But, not everything is as it seems," Kyle replied as his frustration peaked.

Kyle groaned in pain as his frustrations sparked the change within. He doubled over in pain as the familiar bolts danced on his skin.

Michael stared blankly at him as Tess helped Kyle to the couch. "Kyle," she whispered as she rubbed her hands on his arms trying to soothe his pain.

"Whoa-" Michael replied.

Tess looked up at Michael as Kyle closed his eyes. "It's getting worse, we don't know what's going on."

"He's changing- like Liz."

"Changing?" Tess repeated. "Into what?"

"We're not sure-" Michael paused, "Kyle!"

"Yeah-"a muffled voice replied from behind him. He walked into the room to see himself sitting on the couch. "What the fuck?"

"If you claim to be the 'real' Kyle," Michael stated. "Who's he?"

Tess looked down at her husband and then glanced up at his look alike, "he's Alex."

"What?" The three replied in shock.

"I'm not Alex!" he protested as he walked towards Tess. "It's not possible-"

"Anything is possible," Kyle replied as he sat up from the couch, wincing slightly. "What's your favorite dish?"

"Huh?"

"Or your favorite color? Your first kiss? What is the ritual you perform before games?"

"I don't know-" he replied as he sat down, his mind racing. "I don't know."

"You are Alex," Tess whispered. "I'm so sorry, it was the only way-"

"But, how?" Michael interrupted. "Why?"

"It all started when he came back," Kyle explained.

"Who?" Alex questioned.

"Nasedo," Tess answered, as Kyle wrapped his arms around her. "He just showed up one day- it was a little after our Vegas trip."

"He just showed up and you said nothing to us?" Michael questioned. "Why should I believe you- you betrayed us, you lied to us."

"Michael, please- let us explain." Tess urged, as she looked frantically between Kyle and Michael. "Can't you try to understand? You, of all people, should understand the overwhelming feeling of wanting to have a family, to be complete, to feel wanted- after all, you are my brother-"

"Your brother?" Michael repeated.

"Hold up!" Alex interrupted. "What about me? What happened?"

"No, wait- are you telling me we're related?" Michael growled. "When were you going to share this little news flash?"

"Not like you gave her much of a chance," Kyle replied bitterly.

"How could I?" Michael retorted. "She was too busy getting into Max's pants," Michael smirked.

Kyle glared at him in response, jumped up and tackled him to the ground. "Don't speak of my wife like that!" Kyle growled as he pinned the alien down.

"Get off me!" Michael yelled as the phone rang. “Valenti!”

Jim shook his head in disbelief and left to answer the phone.

"Stop this!" Alex cried as he pulled Kyle off Michael. Kyle glanced at his look alike and grinned.

"You're looking good-" Kyle smiled trying to lighten the mood.

"Speaking of looks, what happened to me?" Alex groaned, looking at Kyle and Tess.

"Nesado returned," Tess repeated. "He was erratic- he threatened to kill Kyle because we were involved. That's why we did that whole, 'I only think of you as a sister routine'. I pretended to want Max again. It was all for show."

"Why did you sleep with Max?" Michael inquired.

"I didn't-" Tess whispered. "That was a mindwarp- I had to make him believe that we were together. I needed Nesado to think that we were together-"

"But why?" Alex gasped.

"It was his plan," Kyle replied as he kissed Tess' hand softly. "Everything we did, was to protect us from Nesado’s plans."

"Ok, that explains part of it, but why am I Kyle? When did you switch things?"

"Nesado claimed that he had mindwarped you into decoding the destiny book," Tess replied. "He said when the time came that I was to force everyone back to Antar. That I was to fulfill some deal with Khivar-"

"Max is alive," Jim interrupted as he walked back into the room. "That was Liz on the phone, they’re on their way back."

The group nodded in silent awe. "I knew it," Kyle smirked.

Jim smiled and walked over to his son, "welcome home." Kyle hugged him in response.

"I've missed you-" Kyle moaned as he blinked back tears.

"Ok, sorry to be a pest-" Alex interrupted. "But, what about me?"

"I managed to change your molecular makeup," Tess replied. "You came to me that night. You accused me of mindwarping you and trying to kill you. And then you passed out."

"I came home and found her over your body," Kyle added. "We knew in order for you to live we had to make you disappear-"

"Nesado said he would kill you, since you had finished the book and were no longer useful."

"The night that everyone assumed you died, was the night I left." Kyle continued. "I moved to Las Cruces."

"Las Cruces? You've got to be kidding-" Michael laughed.

"I know," Kyle replied. "You guys showed up- 'investigating' into his death. I saw you on campus."

"Kyle, left. We thought that if we could just fool Nesado long enough, that everything would be ok. But, it just made things more complicated," Tess sighed.

"But, how did you do it?" Alex inquired. "Can you change me back?"

"Using me as a guide, she changed you." Kyle sighed, "She then planted a few memories- you're mind was such a mess that it was easy to do."

"You accepted it," Tess whispered. "I was the only one that noticed the differences between you and the real Kyle. The funniest part, was that you were all of the sudden attached to Isabel, becoming her closet friend- I thought for sure you'd figured it out."

"But, I only remembered parts of that night. I accused you of killing me."

"Yeah-" Tess winced. "Ironic, but the timing was perfect and it gave me the option to leave- for me to go home to Kyle."

"So, let me get this straight." Michael sighed. "You and Kyle were lovers. Nesado came back and threatened to kill everyone. So, you set up Alex’s death, then Alex was transformed into Kyle and Kyle left. But- that was just part of the plan that you two cooked up in order to protect us from this so called plan of Nesado’s and mindwarped Max and then pretended to go home to Antar?"

"Pretty much-" Tess nodded.

"When did you get married?" Jim asked gazing at the couple sitting on the couch.

"When she came to me that night and said we could never go back," Kyle replied. “She told me what happened at the granolith and we decided then that we would make a new home together."

"So, am I stuck being Kyle?" Alex sighed.

"I don’t know-" Tess replied honestly. “Maybe Max can change you back."

"How would we explain me returning?" Alex pondered out loud.

"How are you going to explain two Kyles?" Michael laughed.

"We will figure something out," Jim replied. "But, now that you are both back- I'm not letting the two of you go."

Kyle sighed with relief as he noticed another man in the room. "Isabel was asking for some water-" he whispered as he looked at Kyle and Tess. "Let me guess- more aliens?"

"How does he know?" Kyle inquired.

"This is Jesse, Isabel's husband."
"What?" Kyle and Tess gasped at the same time.

"Hi," Jesse replied as an awkward silence filled the room.

"Hi, I'm Kyle and this is my wife, Tess." Kyle replied as he crossed over and shook his hand.

"Nice to meet you," Jesse replied shaking his head. He plastered a smile on his face and turned around.

"Is Isabel here too?" Tess asked softly as she tightened her grip on Kyle's hand.

"Yeah," Michael replied. "She was shot."

"Shot?" Tess gasped. "Is she okay?"

"She's weak," Alex whispered as he glanced over at Michael. "But, she will push through- we almost lost her."

"Can I see her?" Tess asked as Jesse walked back in the room.

"No-" Michael, Jim, and Alex replied at the same time as a soft "yes," was heard.

Tess turned to Jesse, "She wants to see you and Kyle-"

Tess nodded as the others stood there in shock. Kyle turned to them, "give us a chance-"

"Kyle, you have to understand-" Jim started to reply as Kyle glared at him.

"I understand that we risked our lives," Kyle paused as the air snapped with electricity and his skin glowed with bolts of energy. "We sacrificed everything to save you. We gave up our identities, our families, so that-"

"Kyle," Tess interrupted in a soft whisper. She looked up into his eyes as she rubbed her hands against his arms. "It's okay, give them some time to adjust to the news-" Tess whispered as she nuzzled against his neck and then kissed him softly.

Kyle calmed and the angry bolts dissolved. "Are you sure?" He whispered as he wrapped his arms around her.

"Yes-," She sighed as he pulled her closer. He kissed her tenderly as he slid his hand down to her abdomen. She moaned softly as a soft glow radiated from under her shirt.

"What was that?" Michael gasped as the couple pulled apart, they blushed as they realized they had an audience.

"What was what?" Tess asked slightly confused.

"The glow?" Alex replied as Tess and Kyle exchanged a loving glance.

"Oh, that-" Tess sighed.

"Well?" Michael urged.

She smiled and exchanged another glance with Kyle. "I'm pregnant-" she replied softly.

"And you are ok? No sickness, no pain?" Michael questioned, as his thoughts immediately turned to Maria and the possibility in the future.

"I'm fine- " Tess replied, as she got caught up in Jim's embrace.

"I'm going to be a grandpa-" Jim cried out with joy. "Oh, my- I'll be a grandpa." He replied, as he processed the news further and collapsed on the couch.

"Yes-" Tess and Kyle replied with a tone of laughter in their voice.

Kyle's laughter faded as he noticed Jesse standing in the shadows. "Jesse?" Kyle questioned, as he took Tess' hand.

Jesse nodded and the couple followed him back into see Isabel.

~

"Oh, my- it is you?" Isabel cried out as she glanced at Tess. "How can you show your face back around here?" Isabel snapped.

"Isabel-" Kyle replied harshly. "You don't know the full story-"

"She killed Alex!" Isabel cried out as she struggled to sit up. "Bitch!"

Tess nodded as tears pooled in her eyes; " I'm sorry-"

"Isabel!" Kyle cried as he pulled Tess into his arms.

"How can you take her side?" Isabel questioned.

"Because she didn't kill me-" Alex replied from the open door. Isabel head snapped up and looked at the identical faces.

"Who? What?" Isabel gasped.

"She didn't kill me- she changed me for my safety. I just didn't know-" Alex whispered as he sat down by her bedside.

"Alex?" Isabel whispered as tears rolled down her face.

"The one and only-" Alex laughed. "With a makeover."

"How?" Isabel gasped as she touched Alex's hand.

Tess wiped away her tears as she repeated the tale to her as well.

"I don't know-" Isabel sighed after a soft pause. "This is too much-"

Tess nodded and pulled away from Kyle and walked out of the room.

Kyle glared at Isabel and then followed Tess outside. He pulled her into his embrace and she cried harder into his chest, "I can't do this-"

"Tess, baby-" Kyle whispered. "It'll be okay."

"They hate me," Tess sobbed. "Didn't you see the hate in their eyes?"

"Like you said- we need to give them time."

She nodded and snuggled into his chest. "I love you-" she sighed as he kissed her forehead.

"I love you, too." He replied softly.

~

After a silent reflection, Kyle escorted Tess back inside. "It's so quite," Tess commented as the walked back to the main room.

"Oh, my god- It is true!" Maria cried as she set her eyes on the two.

Max and Liz snapped to attention and glanced at the them. Max stood up and walked towards them.

"Max-" Kyle replied as he felt uneasy under his glare. Tess moved quickly behind him and peaked out at Max.

"Is what they say true?" Max inquired as his heated gaze penetrated Kyle's.

"Yes-" he managed to reply as Max punched him in the abdomen.

Kyle flinched at his attack and felt his anger rise. He immediately punched him back, sending Max soaring across the room.

The room froze as they witnessed Kyle outburst of energy. "What the fuck?" Max grumbled as he glared at Kyle.

"Did they leave out the part where you fucking changed me?" Kyle stormed as he felt the energy around him multiply.

"Kyle-" Tess cried as she tried to take his focus off Max. "Baby-" she purred as she rubbed her hands across his arms and then up his chest. "Look at me-" she whispered as their gazes met.

The rest of them watched as a small glow enveloped around them.

"What's going on?" Maria whispered, as she turned to Michael.

"How should I know?" Michael replied bitterly.

Tess kissed him softly and felt the static of electricity around them calm as he deepened their kiss. A soft moan escaped their lips as they heard a cough.

They kissed once more and glanced at the group in front of them. "We need to rest-" she stated as Jim nodded.

"You can stay in my room," he replied with a grin. Kyle smiled and took Tess' hands in his.

"We need to talk about what's happening!" Max urged.

"Tomorrow," Kyle snapped as they walked out of the room and down the hall. Kyle closed the bedroom door, as Tess' arms lingered around his waist. "I'm sorry-" he whispered, pulling her closer to him.

"Sorry?" Tess gasped. "Sorry about what-"

"I wanted to come. I pushed for us to come back- to this!" Kyle sighed, "I wanted answers, that I know now they don't know."

"They would have found about all this eventually-" Tess replied softly as the sat down on the bed. "If anything, our child will know his grandpa."

Kyle smiled, "yeah- I think he will be a good grandpa."

"I think so too-" She giggled.

The couple embraced and snuggled into the bed. The nightly silence was interrupted by raised voices coming from the other room.

"You think they will forgive us?" Tess wondered as she looked over at Kyle.

"Only time will tell."
