The silence in the chemistry lab could have been cut with a knife. Liz and Tess were paired together for an extra credit assignment and they were working late on their project.
"Are we done yet?" Tess moaned dying to get out of the stuffy room. Tess played with a test tube full with a blue liquid.
"Tess, just go home," Liz replied as she rolled her eyes in response.
"Oh, so you can tell everyone that I couldn't finish a little project?" Tess groaned as her fingers lit up changeing the liquid in the tube. "I don't think so."
"I'm sorry, Tess. Not everyone can be a scientist like me."
"Oh, and not everyone can be a bitch like me?"
"That's not what I meant!" Liz mumbled as she grabbed the tube from Tess.
"But, that's what you were thinking." Tess replied. "You have no idea what it is like to be me."
"and vice versa." Liz sighed as she started to pour the changed contents of the test tube into the experiment.
"No, Liz!" Tess cried as she tried to take the tube away from her.
Liz looked at her with confusion as the liquid combined with the compound.
BOOM
~
"Are you okay?" Tess heard a concerned voice ask. She looked up at Max and smiled.
"I think so." Tess whispered noticing her voice sounded off. "What happened?"
"Your little experiment blew up in your faces," Max laughed.
"Max!" Tess cried as she hit him in the arm.
"Ouch, what's gotten into you?" Max moaned as his eyes twinkled.
Max leaned in and he softly touched her face wiping away some black soot.
Tess heart quickened. She had always wanted Max to be this close to her, to take care for her.
"Max," Tess moaned as his lips touched hers.
"Liz," he mumbled against her lips.
Tess stiffened as 'her' name echoed in her ears. She pulled away and looked into his eyes. "Liz?"
"Come on Liz, the hit on the head wasn't that bad. Tess actually protected you."
Tess continued to stare at him with disbelief. "Tess?"
"Yes, I think she used a force field to protect the two of you from most of the blast."
Tess closed her eyes and tried to remeber the earlier events, "I don't remember."
"Kyle's with her right now," Max replied as he helped her off the couch. "Let me take you home."
"Okay," Tess mumbled as he wrapped an arm around her waist.
Tess looked up at the window and looked at her jagged reflection. Tess gasped as she touched her face.
"What's wrong?" Max asked as he pulled her closer to him.
"Nothing," Tess whispered. "Nothing at all."
~
Liz moaned and opened up her eyes.
"It's about time, I was getting worried," Kyle whispered as Liz looked up at him with confusion.
"What happened?" She asked as she rubbed her forehead.
"Your'e little experiment went boom," Kyle laughed as he helped her to sit up.
"Boom," Liz repeated as she felt like her head would explode. "Where is she?"
"'She' is with Max," he replied as he rolled his eyes.
"She's with Max?" Liz questioned.
"You really need to get over with those destiny issues of yours. It ain't gonna happen."
"What?" Liz gasped as she tried to stand up. "I'm his destiny."
"No, Tess," Kyle moaned. "How many times are we going to go through this?"
"Tess?" Liz repeated as she stood up and looked at her reflection in the window. "Oh, No!"
"Tess, are you okay?" Kyle asked concered as he watched her start to pace back and forth.
"No! I'm Liz!"
"Sure you are, and I'm Max."
~
Tess looked around Liz's room and smiled. She knew it was wrong, but she was loving the change.
"What to do first?" Tess whispered to herself as she looked through Liz's thing.
"Liz?" A voice came from down stairs.
"Yes?" Tess replied quickly.
"It's time for your shift."
"My shift?" Tess gasped. She looked at the Crashdown Uniform and cringed, "it can't be that bad."
~
"Kyle, listen to me. I'm not Tess." Liz cried again pacing the living room.
"Whatever," Kyle replied ignoring her pleas.
"I'm going to see, Maria." Liz announced as she started for the door.
"I'm sure she will be pleased to see you," Kyle grumbled. "See you soon."
"Whatever!" Liz cried as she walked out the door. "I know Maria will listen to me."
~
"Liz! Have you lost your brain? What are you doing?" Jose cried out in vain.
"I'm sorry!" Tess whispered blinking back tears. Her feet hurt, she was covered in a film of grease, and she thought she would lose her mind. "This is harder then I expected."
"What?" Jose snapped.
"Nothing." Tess replied as she grabbed another order.
~
"Hi, Maria, can we talk?" Liz asked Maria as they stood at the door.
"What?" Maria replied as she leaned against the door frame.
"Can we go in?" Liz inquired as Maria rolled her eyes and walked back into the room.
"Tess, I don't have all day," Maria replied impatiently.
"The thing is I'm not Tess, I'm Liz." Liz explained as she fidgeted with her hands.
"Sure, Tess." Maria mumbled as the phone rang. "Hold on."
Liz turned around unable to shake the iciness of Maria's glare.
Maria kept her voice hushed, but Liz knew they were talking about her.
"Tess, I got a run. Can we talk later?" Maria asked quickly as she grabbed her keys.
"Um..."
"Thanks, Liz needs my help." She replied as she pushed her out the door and locked it.
"What?" Liz replied as she watched in awe as Maria drove away. "But I need your help! The real Liz Parker!"
~
"Liz, Honey. Why don't you head on up. The dinner crowd is light I will take care of it." Mr. Parker whispered as he hugged Tess.
Tess sighed at the warm embrace. He softly kissed her head and dismissed her.
Tess ran up the stairs and collapsed on the bed. "I think I can get use to this," she sighed as she threw her shoe across the room accidently knocking over a picture frame.
"Oh, no!" She cried as she picked up the picture frame. She placed her hand over the glass, but nothing happened.
She closed her eyes tight and concentrated. Again, nothing happened. "I lost it... I don't have powers."
~
Tess walked back to the Valenti's and dropped to the couch in defeat.
"Rough day?" Kyle asked with a smirk on his face.
"You have no idea!" Liz moaned. "No one believes me."
"That's what you get for being the devilishly cute alien." Kyle laughed trying to cheer her up.
"Kyle, have you always been this nice?" Liz asked trying to recall this side of her ex-jock boyfriend.
"Only with my favorite Martian," He laughed again as he walked into the kitchen. "Do you want a snack?"
"Sure," Liz replied as she knocked over an empty glass on the table. "Damn."
She sank to the floor and looked at the glass. She placed her hand down to pick up the pieces as they started to twitch on their own.
Liz concentrated on the glass and thought about making it whole. Liz watched amazed as the glass fixed itself. "I have powers?"
~
"It has been almost two days and no one has said a thing!" Tess beamed as she changed out of the Crashdown Uniform.
Tess curled up in bed and sighed. She had everything she had always wanted; parents, a home, close friends, and even on-off boyfriend, but she still felt incomplete.
"Liz?" Max called from the window.
Tess looked over and smiled, "Max, what are you doing here?"
"I wanted to talk to you," He replied as she opened the window and crawled out.
Max wrapped his arms around her and kissed her softly. After a moment Tess pulled away from him, she felt nothing.
"I'm tired, could we talk tomorrow?" She asked touching her lips with her fingertips.
Max nodded. She watched him leave. She sighed as she leaned against the window frame, she suddenly felt free.
~
Liz sulked on the couch. No one believed her, no one believed Tess. She never realized how bad Tess' life was. She had no family, no home, and only one true friend, Kyle.
"I believe you, Liz," Kyle announced as he sat down beside her.
"What?" Liz gasped shocked that he believed her. "When? How?"
"You are not Tess. I know 'Tess' and you are not her," Kyle whispered as his gaze locked with hers.
"How?" Liz mumbled still surprised that he had noticed.
"At first it was subtle, you were sending off a weird vibe," Kyle began. "I assumed it was from the explosion, you were shaken up a little. Then all the little things started adding up."
"The little things?" Liz inquired.
"You don't act like her." Kyle sighed as he smirked. "Tess always looks down, almost closing her eyes when she is thinking or her feelings are hurt. She bites her nails when she's nervous. She always fixes them later. She scrunches up her nose right before she laughs. She calls me Buddha boy."
Liz looked at him with awe, "you love her."
Kyle looked slightly taken a back, as if he had never considered it. "Maybe," he whispered.
"I'm sorry. If it wasn't for my meddling you would be together."
"Why, Liz? Why did you push Max and Tess together?"
"I had too. Tess has to be part of the four. She has to stay in Roswell. She has to be with Max."
"She could be part of the four with me, she could have stayed for me." Kyle replied harshly as he stood up and sprinted to the door.
"Kyle?" Liz cried out after him.
"I'll be back later," He shouted back as she watched him go to the car. She knew he was going to go see Tess.
She stood up and walked to the door. She started the journey to her house. It was time for Tess and Liz to talk.
~
Tess flipped through the rest of Liz's journal's. "I'm sorry Liz. I had no idea," she whispered.
"Tess!" Kyle cried out from the window.
"Yes?" Tess replied without thinking. "Wait..."
"I've missed you," he whispered. She melted at the sound of his voice.
"Kyle," she moaned as he pulled her close and kissed her softly on the lips.
Tess grabbed onto him as their kiss deepened and she felt her knees weaken. She felt complete.
~
Liz walked through the park as she felt a familiar vibe in the air.
"Tess?" Max inquired.
"Max, what are you doing here?" Liz asked sitting beside him.
"You always seem to find me. It must be destiny." He groaned.
"Why?" Liz asked slightly alarmed.
"I went to see Liz earlier. It's gone. The feelings are gone." Max cried as he dropped his face into his hands.
"It's not how it seems," Liz replied as she lifted his face.
"Tess. I.."
"Looks can be deceiving," she whispered. "Max, look into my eyes. Look into my soul. It's me."
Max gaze locked onto her's. He searched deeper into her soul as a familiar surge electricity raced through his body, "Liz."
"Yes," she moaned as he kissed her. The couple embraced as their kiss deepened.
~
Kyle moaned and pulled away from Tess. They were both slightly flushed and breathless. "Tess..." He moaned closing his eyes. "I love you. But, you in Liz's body is, well, creeping me out."
Tess giggled, "I was kinda missing my cute little body and my awesome alien powers."
"What? No death ray eyes?" Kyle chuckled as Tess glared a him.
"I can still get you!" Tess cried as she lunged at him.
"I like to see you try!" He groaned as he climbed out the window. Tess quickly followed him.
"I've missed you," Tess whispered as she wrapped her arms around him.
"I did too," Kyle moaned as he leaned in for a kiss as they heard someone coming up the fire escape. The seperated as Max climbed over the ledge.
"Kyle. Tess." Max stated harshly as he helped Liz up.
"I'm sorry Liz," Tess gasped.
"I think we need to talk in private." Liz replied as she motioned towards her room.
"You two, play it safe." Liz warned Max and Kyle as she walked towards the window.
Max glared at Kyle and Kyle glared back at him. They sat in silence hoping that the girls would be able to switch back.
~
"Why?" Liz asked near tears. "Why, didn't you say anything? They wouldn't believe me."
Tess looked at her and as a wave guilt engulfed her. "I wanted you to know how it felt and I."
"And what?" Liz urged slightly.
"I wanted to be you." She whispered.
"Why?" Liz gasped slightly shocked.
"You've had everything I've always wanted. A home, a family, friends, and even Max." Tess replied slowly watching Liz's reaction.
Liz smiled and nodded in understanding, "and now?"
"I realized that what was before me, was what I have always wanted." Tess sighed as a grin crossed her face.
"Kyle?"Liz asked as she noticed Tess blushing. "He loves you."
"I think, I do too," Tess moaned as she sat down on the bed and looked out the window towards Kyle.
"I'm sorry, Tess."
"Why?" Tess asked shocked. "You didn't once try decieve the others." Tess paused, "I did."
"I realized that being an alien, alone in this world is not exactly what I thought it would be." Liz admited sitting down beside her.
~
"You kissed her?" Kyle asked after a strained silence.
"Who? Liz?"
"But, technicly they were Tess' lips." Kyle growled, "my gilfriends lips."
"Oh, so now she's you girlfriend?" Max asked slightly amused.
"Yes."
"Don't even start it," Max replied. "I have a feeling you were kissing Liz's lips." Max looked up at Kyle with a hint of resentment.
"Possibly," Kyle moaned.
"Why is it always you?" Max cried as his mind flashed back to the night he saw Kyle in bed with Liz.
"Me?" Kyle gasped slightly confused.
"Yes, you! Why does Liz always end up with you?" Max exploded his past feelings fueling his anger.
"Don't you have that backwards?" Kyle chuckled flustering Max.
"What?" Max moaned as he sat back down.
"As I recall, I lost two girls to you." Kyle replied. "Besides, nothing happened between Liz and I."
"Nothing?" Max repeated.
"Nothing."
~
"What do we do?" Tess asked after an awkward pause. She looked over at Liz, who was in deep concentration. "Liz? Hello? Earth to scientist, do you read me?"
"What?" Liz replied coming out of her mental haze.
"How do we switch back?" Tess groaned. "I'm in serious need of some smoochies."
"Smoochies?" Liz giggled. "Kyle, is a good kisser." Liz sighed," but, Max is even better."
"No. Kyle is by far the best." Tess moaned. "And I would really like to kiss him with my lips."
"You kissed him with my lips?" Liz laughed. "It wasn't the first time."
"My first kiss with Kyle and I'm stuck in your body."
"So now you're stuck?" Liz snapped.
"I didn't mean it like that."
"Sure you did."
"Well, fine."
~
"I wonder why it's taking so long?" Max asked after another long pause.
"It's Tess and Liz." Kyle laughed, "we are lucky they are talking with each other."
Max laughed, "that's true."
Max and Kyle laughed as Tess and Liz climbed out the window.
"We're stuck!" Tess cried, " and Miss Scientist can't figure it out."
"The thing is," Liz replied. "We don't know what happened in the first place."
Max and Kyle began laughing harder. The girls glanced at eachother and then smiled.
"What?" Kyle gasped as the two ran towards him pushing him down and play fighting. "Ow.. Ouch!"
Max continued to laugh even harder as he watched on.
"What's so funny?" Liz asked innocently as she turned towards him.
"What?" Max moaned as the two girls attacked him. "Ouch.. Ow!"
The girls laughed as they left the boys moaning on the ground. "Ice cream?" Liz asked and Tess nodded.
~
Tess and Liz felt a small bolt electricity as they continued eating their ice cream.
"I'm me!" Tess cried as she looked down at her hands and looked over at Liz.
"It only took a little bonding and ice cream." Liz gasped as she put her spoon down.
The both squelled in laughter and huged each other.
"Is it safe to come in?" Kyle asked as they entered the room.
"Why did you attack us?" Max asked walking up to the girls with Kyle at his side.
"We were bonding," Liz replied as she winked at Tess.
"Kyle!" Tess cried and walked over to him. Her gaze matched his as she kissed him.
"Tess, you're back!" Kyle moaned in between her kisses.
"Yes," She purred. Kyle and Tess were lost in their embrace. They continued to make out as Max looked over at Liz with hope and walked over to her.
"Liz?" Max questioned as Liz wrapped her arms around him.
"Yes," she whispered. Max leaned in and kissed her softly on the lips.
"Did I miss something?" Maria whispered to Michael as they walked into the Crashdown and noticed the two couples making out.
"Hell, if I know." Michael replied.
"They look cute. I never imagined Tess and Liz to be that close."
"Weirder things have happened."
"'True," Maria whispered. "Lets go, Spaceboy."
Michael and Maria left the couples making out. Neither couple noticed their arrival, nor their departure. Tess and Liz had some bonding time to make up with their boyfriends and Kyle and Max didn't complain.
