Tess finds who she is looking for at the Masquerade. |
The school bell rings and my concentration falters as the students around me move about. Class has ended and there are only three more classes to go. I slowly gather up my things and I'm the one of the last ones to trail out of the room. I start to head for my next class when I hear my name being called.
I turn quickly to see his familiar face. "There you are!" He smiles, his blue eyes sparkling. "You wanna go?"
"Go where?" I ask as he hands me a bright orange flyer with the information dramatically printed in black ink. "A party?" I question as I read the flyer.
"Not just any party!" He explains, "It's Pam's Halloween Masquerade!"
"It's a party," I repeat as I walk towards my next class.
"Let's go?" He suggests, flashing me a smile, his eyes lighting up with excitement.
"With you?" I tease as he pouts.
"Tess!" He whines and I glance over just in time to catch Max and Liz kissing down the hall.
I freeze as the image kills my heart even more. Why can't he love me? I take a deep breathe as I try to cleanse my thoughts and I try to focus on my future.
"Why not?" I reply as I turn my gaze back to him.
"Score."
"But, you can't dress up as Buddha!"
"Oh, I was thinking more on the lines of an Alien King," He grins as he turns to leave.
"Kyle! You wouldn't!"
"Watch me," he laughs as he disappears around the corner amongst the other students.
I sigh as I glance down at the flyer. The so called party was for tonight. Gee, thanks Valenti. Nice.
The rest of the day blurs as I look forward to tonight’s venture. It would be nice to forget about destiny or anything remotely alien related. Tonight, I'm going to be as human as they can get!

I stare at my reflection as I adjust the folds of my gown, the only thing left at the stores was an old southern belle gown.
"Are you wearing that?" He chuckles as I turn and glare at him.
"Remember, death ray eyes!"
"Oh," he cries with sarcasm dripping from his tone. "I'm shaking in my boots."
"Nice boots, I might add," I smile as I study his outfit. "An Alien King?"
"But, of course," he winks. "Nothing better for my Alien queen."
I smile as my heart skips a beat. He takes my hand and I feel tingles of electricity race up my spine.
Our gazes lock for a second, before he studies my gown. "I think it needs to be blue."
I nod and I concentrate on the color, changing it from a pale yellow to a deep royal blue. I look up at the mirror, "much better."
"Blue's your best color," he whispers softly.
I smile, "never knew you could be such a sweet talker."
"You never thought to listen," he replies with a slight shrug as he backs away.
"No, I haven't," I whisper as I realize how closed off I have been to him or any other guy. But, tonight that will change.
"Let's go, my lady! Our masquerade awaits."
~
We approach the house in question, the load music lingering in the air. "Welcome," a familiar voice cries out behind a dark mask as another person in a similar mask, hands us two masks.
"The night has just begun," Kyle whispers in my ear as he helps me put on my mask.
I blink as my eyes adjust to the darkened surroundings. "I can't see you," I reply my voice sounding muffled.
"That's the point," he replies his voice sounding different.
"I don't-" I begin as he shakes his head.
"It's a masquerade. You aren't supposed to know who everyone else is. The mask is equipped to alter our perceptions."
"But-"
"Follow your heart," he states before he disappears into the crowd of people.
"I don't know what my heart wants," I whisper to myself as I try to follow him.
I sigh, becoming frustrated. I could barely see or hear in this stupid mask and I just want to go home!
"Found you," a voice whispers as I feel an arm around my waist.
"Huh?" I mumble as I feel the warmth of his body, and I relax in his arms.
"Having fun?" he asks as I turn to him.
"Not really," I reply as I struggle to see out of the mask. "Kyle?" I question as the music around us increases.
"Huh?" He groans as he takes my hand and escorts me out of the room.
I follow him to a room. I enter the room and I look around, I could barely make out the objects of the bedroom. He shuts the door behind us and for a split second I panic.
I start to head back to the door as he takes my hand and I feel a spark of familiarity.
I relax as he wraps his arms around me waist and he kisses me softly. I freeze with shock, as everything inside me screams with excitement.
His lips press firmer against mine as a small moan escapes my lips. He pulls me towards the bed, not breaking our kiss.
My heart pounds with excitement as his hands wonder down my body and his lips explore my neck.
"Wait," I moan as I push him away. "Who are you?" I whisper as he silences me with another kiss.
All thought and reason fly out of my mind as his electrifying touch send bolts of electricity through my body.
I tug at his mask as I feel his fingers slip under mine. Without breaking our kiss we remove our masks.
I blink as my eyes adjust to the dim light. I pull away from him and gaze at his face.
"You?" I gasp as he grins and kisses me again.
Why not? He makes me feel better and more alive then I have ever felt before.
I wrap my arms tighter around him and our kiss deepens. Who would have guessed it? Me and Michael Guerin.
