Destiny

Pairing Hudson/Lex
Rating PG-13
Summary Set in the future, Lex and Hudson reflect about the past and what their future may bring.
Author's Note Just a little birthday ficlet for Aelora. A little more angsty than I was intending- my muse had other ideas! Not Beta'd.

Superwoman watches him from afar, almost every night since they had parted. She tries to tell herself that she just wants to make sure he's safe- but, that would be a lie. She holds her breath as Lex walks out onto his balcony, his hands trailing over the railings made of pure Kryptonite.

He had created a place where she can only look and never touch- she tries to pretend that she doesn't care.

His face is shadowed by the crescent moon, and she can't deny the pull she still feels for him. He's gorgeous- he's everything she has ever wanted.

She shakes her head, unable to turn her gaze from him. It could have been different, as it had been at one time.

She brushed his bare scalp, the silky soft skin betraying the harsh businessman he pretended to be.

He sighed softly at her caress and he blinked up at her. He glanced at the clock and back at her. "Shouldn't you be sleeping?" He whispered as he shifted slightly away from her touch and grabbed for the down comforter. "Or don't you have someone to save?"

"I wanted to be here with you today," she pouted slightly as she looked up at him.

"Today is just like any other day," he replied dryly as he scooted closer to her, wanting to be near her, but afraid that she would push him away. "But, it means everything if you are going to be here with me."

"I'm not going anywhere," she whispered, leaning into kiss him.

"Don't say that," he whispered his voice lower, vulnerable. "If you don't mean it, I can't take it anymore," he added his eyes meeting hers. "Your word isn't as strong as it used to be."

"I promise," she sighed as she wrapped her arms around him and kissed him. He let himself responded to her kiss, unable to deny the need that he has always had for her. He wrapped his arms around her, holding her close.

He glances at his watch, the time ticking away as if it was just a normal day, but it was anything but that. Lex considers today as the day he came to life- the day the meteorites made him who he is today.

Lex Luthor, the billionaire, the businessman without a heart, without a conscious. He is no longer the weakling, plagued by asthma and the horrid red hair. He is strong; he is a hero to humankind.

He walks over the smooth surface and rests his hand on the railing. He glances over his empire, he has earned so much more then his father ever dreamed of and yet he feels incomplete at the top of his game.

He expects more, he wants her.

He slams his hand down on the railing. He wants what he can no longer have; she made that decision for him.

Hudson pulled back from the kiss as cries that only she could hear echoed in the air. She closed her eyes to concentrate and she immediately regretted it as she felt him stiffen within her grasp.

"What is it this time?" he drawled as he pulled away. "A landslide in Tibet? An earthquake? Or perhaps a monsoon to wash away the filth of humankind?"

Hudson sighed shaking her head. "None of the above," she whispers as she leaned in once more to kiss him.

"But, you have to go, they need you-" He mimicked, his tone grave as he pulled away.

"Yes," she nodded as she quickly glanced out the window.

"I don't have the strength to stop you," Lex replied dryly, glaring at her. "Don't go."

"Lex," she began, glancing between him and the window.

"I'm here, Hudson, in front of you- I've given you everything." He yelled, his anger flaring at her hesitation and the need in her eyes to go. "I love you."

"I love you too," she smiled as she reached her hand out to him.

"It's not enough, Hudson." He groaned. "I can't share you with the world."

~

He closes his eyes and he knows she's near. He can feel it. "I miss you," Lex whispers, knowing that she can hear him.

"Happy Birthday," her voice whispers like a memory in his ears. His eyes snap open and he scans the horizon, unable to see her.

~

"I have to go," Hudson insisted, her eyes pleading. "Please, Lex."

"It's my birthday," he protested. "God damnit, Hudson. Today, I need you. Can't you be the farm girl I remember, instead of the alien you have grown to be?"

She shook her head sadly. "This is why I'm here Lex- this is my destiny." She stated and in a blink of an eye she became the woman he hated, the alien in an elaborate costume.

He watched her fly away for the last time. "I thought your destiny was with me."

~

"I will always love you," she whispers on the wind and turns away quickly, unable to watch him anymore.

She knows that one day she'll be able to hold him in her arms again. They were destined to be together.

The end
